GKM Triangular Glass Knife Maker

Wider and thinner microscopy sectioning with glass knives is possible only with the GKM. The GKM makes glass knives up to 12mm wide with exceptionally straight edges. With both a longer cutting surface and straighter cutting edge, knives made with the GKM section wider plastic blocks and achieve greater clarity, contrast and resolution than paraffin-embedding permits. When used with the JB-4 Microtome, the extra-wide knives from the GKM produce sections as fine as 0.255, and cut block faces as large as 12mm x 16mm. Even kidney and undecalcified bone biopsies can be consistently thin sectioned with little or no fragmentation.

New levels of glass knife size and accuracy are achieved by the GKM's unique glass breaking system. Unlike other instruments which produce knives by breaking glass against pressure points, the GKM uses stress from a single pressure bar which breaks glass downward into a groove. This singular, uniform application of pressure produces its characteristic smoother and wider cutting edges.

No glass-breaking experience is needed to operate the GKM. Scoring , breaking and clamping tensions are preset at the factory. The instrument stays properly adjusted. The rugged, reliable GKM requires little maintenance. Brushing glass chips off the top plate and daily cleaning of the scoring assembly are all it takes to maintain trouble-free operation. The GKM breaks 6mm, 10mm and 12mm glass. Virtually no adjustments are needed for routine operation. A spring positioner with Vernier settings precisely locates glass for breaking 45° or 90°angles. The GKM is designed for use with 100 mm long by 50 mm wide glass strips however, longer strips may be used if desired.

Ralph - Long Glass Knifemaker

Long-edged glass knives are finding increasing application in histology for producing large area semi-thin sections of wax or resin-embedded tissue. The Ralph Glass Knifemaker is capable of producing 38mm wide knives using a single lever action to both score and break the glass. By replacing the steel knife of a microtome with a long glass knife, sections down to 1.55µ can be cut.

The unit accepts both 25mm and 38mm wide glass strips, and produces a straight, uniform cutting edge across the entire width. Vernier marked controls enable a range of knives with different rake angles to be reproducibly made.

Basic Glass Knife Maker for Histology Knives

Models available for both 25mm or 38mm widths

These basic knife makers have been designed to be easy to use, giving consistent and reproducible results making "Ralph" knives of good quality. Glass thickness of 6mm and widths of either 25 mm or 38 mm can be accommodated. The cutter height, cutter pressure and rake angle can be adjusted. Replacement scoring cutter wheels are available.

Deluxe Glass Knife Maker for Histology Knives

Models available for both 25mm or 38mm widths

Our Deluxe Glass Knife Maker moves the glass up to the scoring and breaking position so there is no need to make adjustments to the knife maker for thickness changes in the glass. Replacement scoring cutter wheels are available.
